HankComposer/Performing Artist Hank Hehmsoth’s career spans over three decades, with a comprehensive range of musical accomplishments. Theater, jazz, contemporary art music, performance, movies, and pop are all segments of his creative output. As a nationally recognized award winning composer Hank has composed over 100 individual compositions, in contemporary art music, contemporary jazz, and Latin American world music. As a professional arranger for hire Hank has arranged for national touring Broadway shows, and has over 140 individual arrangements.

As a performing artist Hank has remarkably played over 10,000 individual performances, from international, national, state and regional area performance, and from classical to jazz to pop/rock, as well as Broadway, concert tour music, nightclubs, and symphony.

 Hank received his 2nd Fulbright Senior Specialist Jazz grant from the U.S. State Department. He will be guest professor / artist in residence at Institut ProJazz in Santiago, Chile during the summer of 2016.

Hehmsoth was the 2015 Dean’s Seminar Award winner. He is the MacDowell Norton Stevens Fellow in Composition, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellow in jazz composition, placed first in the 2010 National Association of Composers USA, Texas Competition, and has been a multiple nominee for the Texas State Presidential Award for Excellence in Scholarly/Creative Activities. He was a member of the Austin-based Christopher Cross group, which won five Grammy Awards as well as an Academy Award for best song, and is a voting member of the NARAS Grammy Awards.

Hank received a 2011 MacDowell Fellowship in music composition, with a 2010 composition, "Two Desert Dances," © Time/Space Fabrics 2010, a jazz and string ensemble piece featuring live performance with 60-year-old recordings of Native American dance from the John Donald Robb Archive of Southwestern Music.

Hank founded HPPAA - H Project Performing Arts Association, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in Texas. He is Chairman of the Board. The mission of H Project is to continually refresh and envision the contemporary, jazz, and world music experience. H Project fulfills its mission through commissioning, performing, presenting, recording and publishing contemporary music, and collaborating with, mentoring and encouraging other artists.

Hank recorded a PBS/KLRU Wildflowers television documentary on the fragile bio-ecosystem of Texas.

In the 2010 National Association of Composers, USA, Texas Composition Competition, Hank won top honors in the professional category with a string quartet, “X-trusions- a déjà vu in 4D” © Time/Space Fabrics 2010. The piece was performed during the International Joint Conference on Latin-American and Modern Music.

Hank received the 2010 ACO-JCOI American Composers Orchestra-Jazz Composers Orchestra Institute Special Recognition Award by the Center for Jazz Studies, Columbia University for the composition: “Theme from Carlos' n Charlie's” © Time/Space Fabrics 2010, a Latin jazz piece for steel drum band, awarded by George E. Lewis – Director.

Hehmsoth's composition Carlos' n Charlie's is published internationally by Drop 6 Media, Inc.

Hank received a commission for a 2002 Arrangement: “Jesus Christ SuperStar - New Millenium” for the Broadway Across America /Paramount Theater national tour.

Hank received a NARAS National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, Inc. Certificate of Appreciation for his Interactive Workshop, Seminar, and Master Class "Computers & Music (MIDI)".

Hank is a lifetime Voting Member for the "GRAMMY© Awards".

Hank was the Austin City Council’s 1996 : “Live Music Capital of the World Honoree”, with a live City Council Chamber TV appearance.

Hank was commissioned by the U.S. National Park Service for the 1997 Film Score: “Documentary – Lady Bird Johnson” – birth, life, state and national contributions of Lady Bird Johnson, with a first public performance at the LBJ Ranch “White House”, Johnson City, Texas.

Ballet Austin commissioned and premiered Hank’s Ballet: “Ritú Del Sol Andes: Diem” a ballet of world music for Andean Flutes and Tribal drums, performed by the Kinesis Dance/Theatre Project, director and choreographer Toni Bravo, premiered at Mary Mooden Theater, Austin, Texas.

Hank and director/playwright Melba Martinez created and produced the original Musical Play: “Walk With Me, music and lyrics by Hank Hehmsoth, a play dealing with the medieval practice of walking religious labyrinths as an ancient meditation tool, premiered at Mary Mooden Theater, Austin, Texas.

The Austin American Statesman newspaper Austin Critics Table Awards awarded Hank Best Musical Director – for the Mary Mooden Theatre production of “Hair”.

Hank composed and scored the 1995 1st Place winner: Worldfest International Film Festival “Scary Movie”, a feature length movie (released 1996) Erickson/Brunson Productions.

Hank Hehmsoth, as member of the Christopher Cross pop-rock group, won an Academy Award at the 54th Annual Academy Awards© winner Academy Award “Best Song” (from the film "Arthur") title: "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)". The group won 5 Grammies at the 23rd Annual GRAMMY© Awards. Trivia: Christopher Cross became the first and only artist to win all four General Field awards in one night, which include Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year (“Sailing”) and Best New Artist.

Hank was awarded a NEA National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship Grant, under Category one: Non-matching fellowship grants to established professional jazz artist of exceptional talent, to advance their career through composition, arrangement, and performance.

Hank received a 1979 award: “Jazz Performance” from Downbeat Magazine.

As a studio musician Hank Hehmsoth has recorded dozens of albums, soundtracks, national commercials (ex. McDonald’s), opening closing credits for the PBS Austin City Limits, from the award winning Joe Scruggs children’s album “ Late Last Night”, to numerous rock, blues, and jazz artists, and recently the last two albums of the noted German pop star Ulli Möhring, “T.U.N.” and “Leben”.

As a Warner Communications professional tour musician Hank performed on national and international tours with Christopher Cross (5 years), Fleetwood Mac (international “Tusk” album 1 year tour), The Eagles (national “The Long Run” album 1 year tour), and Bonnie Raitt (spring/summer tour).

As an ensemble director Hank Hehmsoth has been the principal member and proponent of the contemporary music ensemble “The H Project” for 15 years.

As a music producer Hank Hehmsoth, owner Music Design Group®, has produced film scores, documentaries, a ballet, an original musical play, television themes, underscoring for television, and national and local television ads and radio spots.

On the Texas State University School of Music faculty since 1997 Hank teaches composition and jazz piano at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
